Teachers from the island of Santiago celebrate day dedicated to the class with socializing in Tarrafal
Tarrafal, 23 Apr (Inforpress) - The Teachers Union of Santiago Island today gathered in the municipality of Tarrafal (Santiago Island) more than a thousand teachers from all over Santiago Island to celebrate Cape Verdean Teacher's Day with a gathering.

Under the motto “It is time to value teachers to achieve the objectives of the development of the millennium”, today was marked by homage sessions, sports activities, a fraternization lunch and a military march.

According to the president of SIPROFIS, Abraão Borges, these activities are “of great relevance” for the class, since they managed to gather teachers from all over the island of Santiago, Portugal and Brazil in Tarrafal, with a single objective of continuing to “ work for the dignity of the teachers' class ”.

Despite the gains achieved, taking into account that about 62 percent (%) of teachers' claims (progression, reclassification, subsidies for not reducing the workload) have already been resolved, this unionist wants to reach the goal of 100%.

“In terms of progression, there were about 1200 on the list, but around 700 teachers have already been covered, with a very small number missing, but we want all the rights of teachers to be safeguarded. In terms of reclassification, from 2013, 145 teachers are missing, but will be reclassified in May, but we still have more than 300 reclassifications from 2014 and 2015 ”, he said, highlighting that 38% of the claims remain to be resolved.

As part of the Teacher's Day celebrations, Professor Abel Macedo, from the Teachers' Union of the North (SPN) of Portugal, was honored and the teachers participated in the activities of the centenary of Tarrafal, an event marked by a military march.

For the president of the Municipality of Tarrafal, José Soares, the integration of teachers in the celebration of the centenary of Tarrafal gave a different color to the activities, but it is also an opportunity to congratulate all the teachers of this municipality.

"If today the municipality of Tarrafal is at a level where it is, it is thanks to the commitment and hard work of teachers, from literacy teachers, from teachers who went through Primary Education to those who teach in Secondary and Higher Education", he said.
